I've heard good things about Bradley's series, but I've never delved into it.

I've read the Priestess of Avalon which is the 4th (?) in the series. It was really good. Now I'm on the 2nd in the series and it's pretty good so far. Next comes the third in the series then finally the 1st. Backwards I know, but I'm reading them in the order in which I got them and in which they are due back to the library.
I think you'll like it because the Romans and fighting and history works itself into the fantasy.
For that matter, the book I read last, Shield of Three Lions by Pamela Kaufman, is worth picking up too.
