English History

So it seems I’ve been hooked into the world of the Tudors. Henry VIII to be more specific.

It all started when I watched the movie The Other Boleyn Girl. It’s a true story dealing with King Henry and his second wife Anne Boleyn. A good movie if you are into that type of thing. That type of thing being either romances or history.

Then on Showtime I discovered the drama The Tudors. And I’m obsessed. I’ve watched through all of season one and only have two episodes left in season 2. For season 3 I have to wait for netflix to deliver them to me. I might lose my mind in the process. The show is very racy and is not kid friendly. There are indeed sex scenes and lots of nudity. Oh! My favorite person in the show was Thomas More. He was a great man in history and was well played in the show. I say was because he got beheaded in the beginning of season 2. Kinda a spoiler but if you know history you saw that coming.

I’ve also been using Wikipedia to my advantage and have been looking up some of the people portrayed in the show. So far, from what I’ve read, the show seems to be fairly accurate to history.

Anyway, I’m obsessed but it was a great movie and a great show. Check them out.

Oh, and David, if you know of any good books dealing with Henry VIII please let me know. I don’t know if this is in your area of specialties.

  1. Try Sharon Kay Pennman. "When Christ and the Saints Slept" is just incredible. It really lets you see the ground work that went into Elizabeth I coming to the throne. I have a few more writers I can recomment to you, I've actually studied this period indepth.

  2. I love this period of history, though I haven't had a chance to watch The Tudors yet.

Alison Weir is really well known for her Tudo biographies and they are good reads. Of course, I find their history questionable, but that's just me. :) She's very readable and it's hard to put one of her books down. Antonia Fraser has mined the same area with much greater success, though.

"The Wives of Henry VIII" is widely regarded as an excellent book. She's got a few others on the Tudor era that are supposed to be good too, but that would be a good place to start, given what you're interested in.

Also, if you have iTunes on your computer (you don't have to have an iPhone/iPod to use it), the podcast "Stuff You Missed in History Class" has just had a few episodes on Elizabeth that were really good too.

That should get you started, at least. :)

  3. Ha, ha, ha…i asked my husband, also an historian what he thought about Henry the VIII, (as i had asked more directly earlier, what books do you reccomend?) and his reply was…
    "Don't marry him".
